PDPAOLA Review 2026:
An Honest Look + Waterproof Alternatives

What the brand genuinely does well, what buyers complain about most often, and which alternatives are built to survive a shower.

The Background

Who PDPAOLA Is and How It Got Here

A family business from Barcelona that turned demi-fine jewellery into a design language. Where it came from explains a lot about what it is, and is not, built for.

PDPAOLA was founded in Barcelona in 2014 by a brother and sister, Paola and Humbert Sasplugas. The brand grew up in a very specific wave: young European labels selling design-led jewellery at a price between costume and fine, mostly online and mostly through social platforms. It became one of the names people genuinely recognise in that category, particularly in Italy and Spain.

This review does not set out to tell you PDPAOLA is bad. It is not. It sets out to explain what you are actually buying, what the review data says in volume rather than anecdote, and which alternatives make sense if your priority is jewellery you never take off.

The Short Version PDPAOLA is a Barcelona design house making 925 sterling silver and 18k gold-plated brass jewellery. It is strong on design. It does not market its pieces as waterproof, and that single fact explains most of the negative reviews you will read.
The Materials

What PDPAOLA Jewellery Is Actually Made Of

PDPAOLA works in two material families: 925 sterling silver and brass plated with 18k gold. Neither is a shortcut or a red flag; they are the two most common materials in the demi-fine category, used by hundreds of respected European brands. But they behave in particular ways, and knowing how is the difference between a happy purchase and a disappointed one.

Sterling silver: beautiful, and chemically active

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper for strength. It has a weight plated steel cannot imitate, and a jeweller can polish, resize or repair it years later. That is a genuine advantage.

The trade-off is chemistry. Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in air, sweat, cosmetics and water. That reaction is tarnish, and it is not a manufacturing fault; it is what silver does. Worn daily and never cleaned, a silver piece darkens. Cleaned occasionally with a proper cloth, it comes straight back. The maintenance is small, but not optional.

18k gold plating over brass: the layer is the whole story

Gold plating means a thin layer of real gold deposited over a base metal, here brass. On day one it is indistinguishable from solid gold at arm's length. The only questions are how thick that layer is and how hard you are on it.

Plating wears. Friction wears it, and moisture accelerates the process, because once a microscopic gap opens the brass underneath is exposed. Brass contains copper, and copper reacts with skin acids and water. That is the mechanism behind what people describe as jewellery "oxidising" or leaving a green mark, and our guide on why jewellery turns green has the chemistry in detail.

The Distinction

Plating vs Coating

Gold plating and PVD coating are often used interchangeably in product descriptions, and they should not be. Plating deposits gold in a chemical bath. PVD bonds the finish in a vacuum chamber at a molecular level, which produces a far harder, denser surface.

The practical difference shows up around water and friction. A plated piece has a finite number of showers in it. A PVD-coated piece on a stainless steel base does not degrade the same way, which is why waterproof claims are almost always attached to PVD rather than plating.

Our guide to PVD coating breaks down exactly how the process works and what to look for on a product page.

The Review Data

What 9,900 Trustpilot Reviews Actually Reveal

Individual reviews are noise. Volume is signal. So rather than quoting anyone, here is the shape of the data.

PDPAOLA holds a 4.0 out of 5 rating across roughly 9,900 Trustpilot reviews. That is a genuinely respectable score, and it deserves saying plainly: a four-star average on nearly ten thousand reviews means the large majority of customers were satisfied. Plenty of well-known brands would take it.

The detail worth reading is the distribution. Around 13% of those reviewers left one star, which makes the rating polarised rather than merely average: a large body of happy customers alongside a meaningful minority who had a bad experience and wanted it on record.

The two themes that repeat

Read enough negative reviews and two subjects recur: chains that oxidise or discolour within a few months, and warranty claims that were declined.

At face value those look like quality problems. Read them alongside the materials section above and a different picture forms. Silver tarnishing and plating wearing through are predictable outcomes of daily wear in water, and warranties rarely cover a finish behaving the way that finish behaves. From the buyer's side it still feels like a failure, because nothing on the product page prepared them for it.

The Central Difference

The Waterproof Question Nobody Asks First

This is the honest comparison point, and it is not a criticism. It is a difference in what each brand set out to build.

PDPAOLA does not make any waterproof claim about its jewellery. That is a verifiable fact rather than an accusation, and not claiming waterproof is not the same as making a flawed product. It is a positioning decision. A sterling silver ring and a gold-plated brass necklace are jewellery in the traditional sense: you put them on, you wear them, you take them off before the shower. That is how jewellery has worked for several thousand years.

What has changed is behaviour, not chemistry. A large share of people now never remove their jewellery at all. If that is you, a piece designed on the traditional model will disappoint you eventually, no matter how well it was made.

So the useful question is not "which brand is better". It is: does this brand claim its pieces survive water, and does the material support that claim? If not, the brand is asking you to take the piece off. If you were never going to, you have identified your problem, and it is not the brand's craftsmanship.

Most disappointment in demi-fine jewellery is not a quality failure. It is a mismatch between how a piece was designed to be worn and how it is actually worn.

What PDPAOLA Gets Genuinely Right

It would be easy to write an alternatives article that quietly buries the brand it reviews. That would not be useful, and it would not be accurate here.

The design is the product. PDPAOLA built a recognisable visual identity, genuinely difficult in a category where most brands are interchangeable. Ten years on, the aesthetic still reads as theirs rather than a copy of somebody else's. For many buyers that is the whole reason to choose it, and it is a good one.

Sterling silver is a real material with real advantages. A 925 piece can be polished back to new, repaired and resized. It ages in a way a coated piece cannot, and some people specifically want that. If you like the ritual of caring for jewellery, silver rewards it.

The fair summary: PDPAOLA is a design-first brand working competently in traditional demi-fine materials. If your jewellery lives in a box between wears, there is little reason to look elsewhere on durability grounds. The comparison only gets interesting when your jewellery never comes off.

The Local Field

The Italian Brands Worth Putting Beside It

In Italy, PDPAOLA competes against domestic names with quite different histories and material choices. Several work in steel, which changes the durability conversation entirely.

Brosway

Part of the Bros Manifatture group, founded in 1979 in Le Marche, Brosway is the establishment player here. It works in 316L and 304 stainless steel with 14K PVD finishes, prices run roughly €14 to €79, and it is distributed through traditional jewellery shops rather than purely direct-to-consumer. If you want to handle a piece before buying, that retail footprint is a real advantage.

Kidult

Made by Mabina in Milan, Kidult built its identity on engraved 316L steel bangles at €25 to €42, each carrying a word or message. It holds a 4.6 Trustpilot rating across 794 reviews, the strongest score in this group, albeit on a far smaller review base than PDPAOLA's. Steel means the durability question largely takes care of itself.

Luca Barra

Founded in Salerno in 2009, Luca Barra also works in steel and is best known for its tennis bracelets. Trustpilot rating sits at 4.4. It sits in similar accessible price territory to Brosway and Kidult.

Nove25

Nove25 is the reference point for personalisation in Italy, positioned more premium than the steel brands above. If bespoke matters more to you than water resistance, it is the name most often mentioned.

Read that table honestly and the pattern is clear. Several of these brands already use the durable material. What almost none of them do is put the waterproof promise in writing and design the whole catalogue around it. That is the gap.

Full Disclosure

Where Moonela Fits, and Where It Doesn't

We make jewellery, so treat this as what it is: our own case, stated plainly, including the parts that do not flatter us.

What we actually use

Moonela pieces are 18k gold PVD over 316L stainless steel: the same surgical-grade alloy Brosway and Kidult use, chosen because it does not corrode and releases very little nickel. The PVD finish is bonded in a vacuum chamber rather than deposited in a plating bath, which is what lets it survive showers, sea water, the gym and sleep without changing colour. Prices run from about £24 to £60.

What we are not

We want to be direct, because a lot of brands here are not. PVD gold is a coating, not solid gold. It is not 18k throughout, it cannot be melted down, and no jeweller will resize it the way they would a silver or solid gold ring. If you want a heirloom metal with intrinsic value, PDPAOLA's sterling silver line is a more sensible purchase than anything we sell, and we would rather say so.

We also never describe our steel pieces as sterling or 925, because they are not. The one exception in our range is the Azone fine line, which is genuinely built on 925 silver. Everything else is steel with an 18k gold PVD finish, labelled exactly that way.

What the trade-off buys you

You give up melt value and repairability. In return you get a finish that needs no polishing cloth, no removing at the pool, and cannot turn your neck green, because on steel there is no reactive copper waiting to be exposed. For many people that is a straightforward win. For others it genuinely is not.

Choose sterling silver if

You want a material with intrinsic value, you clean it occasionally, and you take jewellery off before water.

Choose gold-plated brass if

You want the look of gold cheaply for occasional wear, and accept the plating has a finite life.

Choose PVD on steel if

You never take jewellery off, have sensitive skin, or have already been burned by a chain that changed colour.

Choose solid gold if

Budget allows and you want something permanent, repairable and holding value. Nobody in this comparison sells that.

The Real Gap

The Script Name Necklace Nobody Makes in Steel

Of everything in this comparison, this is the one thing that genuinely is not available elsewhere.

Personalisation is everywhere in jewellery right now, but look closely and most of it is engraving: a name or date cut into an existing shape, a disc, a bar, a bangle. Kidult built an identity on engraved steel. Nove25 is the personalisation reference in Italy. Letter charms are the standard answer.

Far rarer is the piece most people picture when they say "name necklace": the name cut as a continuous script pendant, flowing cursive, letters joined. That shape is difficult to produce, and where it exists it is almost always silver or gold-plated brass, subject to exactly the wear behaviour described earlier. A name necklace is worn every single day, often for years, which makes it the worst possible candidate for a finish that needs removing before a shower.

So we made it in the durable material instead. Our name necklaces are cut in script from 316L stainless steel and finished in 18k gold PVD, which as far as we can find makes them the only waterproof script name necklaces available. Not engraved. Not a letter charm. The name itself, in cursive, in a metal that survives constant wear. Our initial necklaces use the same construction.

The Decision

Matching the Brand to the Way You Live

Forget rankings. The only question that predicts whether you will still be happy in six months is how you intend to wear the piece.

If this is you What to look for
You take jewellery off before showering and store it properly Sterling silver or gold-plated brass is fine. Buy on design; PDPAOLA is a strong option.
You never take your jewellery off, ever You need PVD on stainless steel and a brand that states water resistance. Anything else disappoints eventually.
You react to most metals 316L steel with a PVD barrier is the low-risk choice. Check our tarnish-free earrings if ears are the problem area.
You want a name or initial you will wear daily Prioritise metal over style. A script pendant in steel outlives the same shape in plated brass by years.
You want a gift that will not need explaining later Something waterproof and hypoallergenic removes the care instructions entirely. Our gifts for her edit is built around that.

Two questions to ask on any product page

What is the base metal? If a page says "gold plated" without naming the base, it is usually brass, which tells you how it will age. And is water resistance stated in writing? Not implied by beach photography. Stated. If a brand will not put it on the page, assume the answer is no.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PDPAOLA jewellery waterproof?

PDPAOLA does not make a waterproof claim for its jewellery. Its pieces are 925 sterling silver and 18k gold-plated brass, traditional demi-fine materials designed to be removed before showering or swimming. That is a positioning choice rather than a defect. If you want jewellery that stays on in water, look for PVD coating on stainless steel and a brand that states water resistance explicitly.

Does PDPAOLA jewellery tarnish or turn black?

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes when exposed to air, sweat and cosmetics, and gold plating over brass wears with friction and moisture, exposing the copper-containing base beneath. Some PDPAOLA reviewers report chains that oxidise within a few months. Both are normal material behaviours rather than a fault unique to the brand, and both are slowed considerably by removing pieces before water.

Is PDPAOLA real silver?

In part. PDPAOLA works in 925 sterling silver, 92.5% pure silver, and also produces pieces in brass plated with 18k gold. Check the material on the individual product page, because the two behave very differently over time: silver can be polished back to new, gold plating over brass cannot be restored once worn through.

Is PDPAOLA worth the money?

It holds 4.0 out of 5 across roughly 9,900 Trustpilot reviews, so most buyers are satisfied. Around 13% left one star, with recurring themes of chains oxidising within months and warranty claims declined. Good value if you wear jewellery occasionally and store it properly; poor value if you intend never to take it off.

What are the best waterproof alternatives to PDPAOLA?

Look for 316L stainless steel with a PVD finish rather than plating. In Italy, Brosway uses 316L and 304 steel with 14K PVD at €14 to €79, Kidult makes engraved 316L steel bangles at €25 to €42, and Luca Barra also works in steel. Moonela builds its whole range on 18k gold PVD over 316L steel and states water resistance explicitly, at £24 to £60.

Can you shower with stainless steel jewellery?

Yes. 316L stainless steel does not corrode in water, and a PVD finish is bonded at molecular level rather than sitting on the surface as a separate layer, so showering, swimming and washing do not degrade it. Rinsing off chlorine or salt water afterwards is sensible for any jewellery, but not required to protect the finish.

Is 18k gold PVD better than 18k gold plating over brass?

For durability, yes. PVD is applied in a vacuum chamber and produces a much harder, denser surface than an electroplated layer, and on stainless steel there is no reactive copper underneath to cause green marks. Plated brass sometimes uses a slightly thicker gold layer, but it wears through faster and cannot be repaired. Neither is solid gold, and no brand should describe either as such.

Which brands make personalised name necklaces in waterproof steel?

Very few. Most personalisation here is engraving on an existing shape, or letter charms, and where a true script name pendant exists it is usually silver or gold-plated brass. Moonela cuts its script name necklaces from 316L stainless steel finished in 18k gold PVD, so they can be worn in water indefinitely.
