Waterproof Jewellery Brands Compared 2026: What Actually Survives Water
Waterproof Jewellery Brands
Compared 2026
Seven brands, one honest question: what actually survives water? Materials, prices, warranties and personalisation, side by side, with nothing hidden about our own pieces either.
Waterproof Is a Claim, Not a Standard
There is no certification body for waterproof jewellery. No test lab, no rating, no equivalent of a diving watch's 10 ATM. The word on a product page tells you what a brand hopes, not what a piece does.
That single gap explains almost every disappointed review you will ever read about gold-toned jewellery. Two necklaces can carry the same word on the same product page, sit at the same price, and behave completely differently the first time they meet chlorine, sweat or a hot shower. The difference is never the word. It is the base metal underneath, the coating method laid on top of it, and how thick that coating actually is.
So this is a comparison built the boring way: what each brand states about its own materials, what it charges, what it promises if something goes wrong, and what it will and will not personalise. We have included ourselves on exactly the same terms, and been just as specific about the limits of our own pieces. A comparison that only flatters the brand writing it is an advert, not a comparison.
Everything below reflects what these brands publish about themselves plus publicly visible review volumes at the time of writing. Ratings move and terms get updated, so check the current page before you buy on the strength of any table, including ours.
Four Materials, Four Endings in Water
Nearly every brand in this comparison is built on one of four material stories. Understanding them takes about four minutes and saves you from most bad purchases.
1. Stainless steel with a vacuum-deposited coating
A 316L stainless steel core carries a gold-toned layer applied inside a vacuum chamber rather than a chemical bath. PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) and IP (Ion Plating, a PVD family process) both work this way, bonding the colour at a molecular level, which is why it tolerates water, sweat and friction far better than an electroplated finish. This is the material behind most brands that use the word waterproof with a straight face, and it is what we use. Our explainer on PVD coating on jewellery covers the process in detail.
2. Stainless steel with conventional gold plating
Same excellent core, different finish. Electroplated gold over steel looks identical on day one and behaves well for a while, because even when the plating wears the metal underneath does not rust or turn your skin green. It drifts towards a steel tone rather than failing dramatically.
3. Plated brass
Brass is a copper alloy, and copper is exactly what reacts with moisture and skin acidity. Plating over brass can look beautiful and can be genuinely thick and well made, but the moment the layer thins anywhere, the metal underneath starts talking back. This is the classic origin story of a green wrist, which we unpack in our guide to jewellery turning green and how to fix it.
4. Sterling silver, 925
The oldest and in many ways the most honest material here. A precious metal, polishable back to life indefinitely, and it holds detail beautifully. It also tarnishes: silver reacts with sulphur compounds in air and on skin and goes progressively darker. That is chemistry, not a defect. But if your requirement is jewellery you never take off and never think about, silver is the wrong tool for the job.
Eterna Roma
A chunky chain bracelet built on the material story described above: surgical-grade stainless steel with an 18k gold PVD finish. Not solid gold, and we would never call it that. Just a colour that stays put through showers, gym sessions and sea water.
Waterproof. Hypoallergenic. No removal ritual required.

Seven brands that come up constantly in waterproof jewellery searches, on the criteria that actually predict how a piece behaves over three years of wear. Where a brand does not publish a figure, the table says so rather than guessing.

Two things jump out before any brand-by-brand detail. The first is that this segment is genuinely strong on materials: several of these brands work with the same 316L core and the same family of vacuum coatings, a much higher baseline than the plated-brass fast fashion that dominated a decade ago.
The second is the empty column. Six of the seven either do not offer a personalised script name necklace at all, or personalise only in a material that is not waterproof. That is not a criticism of their ranges. It is a verifiable gap in what the market sells.
The hardest thing to find in 2026 is not gold-toned jewellery that survives water. It is your own name, written in script, that survives water.
PURELEI: The Benchmark and Its Missing Number
Founded in Mannheim in 2016, PURELEI is the brand most shoppers name first when this subject comes up, and it has earned that position. It sits at a Trustpilot rating of 4.4 across roughly 5,450 reviews at the time of writing. Volume matters here: a 4.4 across thousands of reviews is a far more meaningful signal than a 4.9 across sixty.
The pricing is the most accessible in this comparison, roughly €12.90 to €47.90, and the range is built on stainless steel with 14K or 18K ion plating. Ion plating is part of the PVD family, so the underlying technology is the right one for water resistance.
In late 2024 PURELEI introduced a five-year warranty across its jewellery, one of the longer terms in this segment. A brand willing to stand behind a piece for five years is telling you something about its confidence in the coating.
The one figure the spec sheet does not give you is coating thickness in microns. That is the number separating a finish lasting eighteen months from one lasting five years, and almost nobody in this category publishes it, PURELEI included. It is an industry-wide habit rather than a scandal. But when two pieces cost the same, thickness is the variable doing the work, and its absence means you are trusting the warranty instead of the spec.
The other gap is personalisation. PURELEI does not offer a script name necklace, so if a name in flowing script is what you came for, this is not the range that answers it, however good the rest of it is.
Luamaya and ICRUSH: The Closest Twins
These two deserve more attention than they get, because on materials they are the closest thing to a like-for-like comparison with what we make.
Luamaya
Founded in 2016, Luamaya builds on 316L stainless steel with 18k gold plating and positions itself squarely on waterproof wear. That is an unusually clean proposition: same surgical-grade core, same category promise, no hedging about what the jewellery is for. The Trustpilot picture at the time of writing sits at 4.0 across around 2,980 reviews, with roughly 13% of those reviews at one star.
That 13% is worth reading properly rather than sensationally. Every direct-to-consumer jewellery brand accumulates one-star reviews, and many concern delivery, returns and service rather than the metal itself. It suggests the experience is less consistent than the headline rating implies, not that the product is bad.
ICRUSH
Cologne, founded 2013, and the closest material twin in this comparison: stainless steel with PVD coating, which is exactly our own construction. Trustpilot sits around 4.0 at the time of writing. Longevity counts for something too, and a brand that has been coating steel since 2013 has had over a decade to refine its process.
If your entire requirement is gold-toned steel that handles water, both of these brands are legitimate answers and we would not pretend otherwise. The distinction appears only when you want something personalised.
The Snake Smooth Necklace
A liquid-looking snake chain that reads as a fine jewellery silhouette and behaves like a piece you can forget you are wearing. The finish is 18k gold PVD, the core is 316L steel, and neither of those minds a shower.
Layer it, sleep in it, swim in it. It stays the colour it started.

View NecklaceWhen the Base Metal Changes the Answer
Three brands in the table are not competing on the same axis, and pretending otherwise would be unfair to them. They are good at what they do. What they do is a different thing.
Paul Valentine
Founded in Mannheim in 2015, Paul Valentine has built one of the most recognisable design languages in European accessible jewellery, and design is a real reason to buy. The material story is mixed: the core range is plated brass, alongside two separate lines in 925 sterling silver and 14k. Trustpilot at the time of writing shows 3.9 across a very large 18,800 reviews, with around 22% at one star.
Two honest observations. First, 18,800 reviews is an enormous sample, and brands at that scale accumulate service complaints that smaller brands have not had time to generate. Second, plated brass and daily water contact are a difficult combination for anyone, because of what copper does once the plating thins. If you love the designs, buy the designs. Just treat those pieces as plated brass: off before the shower, off before the pool, dry storage.
Elli and Kuzzoi
Both work primarily in 925 sterling silver, which puts them in a different and genuinely respectable category. Silver has real intrinsic value, polishes back to brightness forever, and takes fine detail beautifully. It also tarnishes, predictably, because sulphur in air and on skin reacts with it. No brand can engineer that away.
So the question is not which is better. It is whether you want jewellery you maintain or jewellery you forget. Silver rewards maintenance. Coated steel removes the need for it.
Heideman
Heideman works in 316L stainless steel, which is the same excellent surgical-grade core used by most of the waterproof-positioned brands here. Steel as a base metal is hypoallergenic, corrosion resistant and does not turn skin green, which already puts any piece ahead of plated brass on durability grounds.
Reading a Warranty Before You Trust It
Warranty length has quietly become the headline number in this category, and PURELEI's move to a five-year term in late 2024 raised the bar. But a warranty is only as useful as what it covers, and length is the least informative part of it. Four questions worth answering on any brand's terms page first:
Many warranties cover manufacturing defects such as a failed clasp or a lost stone, while excluding discolouration and normal wear of the finish. Coating wear is the most common complaint in this category, so its inclusion is the entire question.
Repair, replacement, store credit and refund are four very different outcomes. A long term that resolves in store credit is a loyalty mechanism as much as a guarantee.
Cross-border returns can cost a real fraction of a €30 necklace. If the customer carries that cost, the practical value on lower-priced pieces shrinks fast.
Order number only, or original packaging and receipt years later? The evidence bar decides how many claims actually succeed.
Applying those questions honestly to ourselves: we are a smaller brand than most of the names in this table, and our terms sit on the site rather than being announced as a headline number. We would rather state the specification plainly than compete on a figure, because the specification is what you can check against your own wrist in two years. And no coated jewellery is eternal. Rings and bracelets take more friction than necklaces, so they show wear first, on every brand here including ours.
The Gap Nobody Fills: Script Names in Water
Go back to the last column of the comparison table, because it is the most interesting one on the page.
This market is well served on chains, hoops, signet rings and stacking bands. It is barely served at all on personalised script names in a waterproof material. PURELEI, the category leader, does not offer a script name necklace. Neither Luamaya nor ICRUSH lists one. Elli and Kuzzoi personalise in sterling silver, which is lovely and which tarnishes. Either you get the material you want without your name on it, or your name on something you take off before the shower.
That gap is why our own range is built the way it is: a custom script name pendant cut in 316L stainless steel, finished in 18k gold PVD, priced in the same accessible band as the rest of the category. Same water tolerance as a plain chain, because it is the same material.
One precision, because the words get used loosely. Engraving cuts letters into an existing shape, usually a bar, disc or heart. A script name necklace cuts the pendant itself into the shape of the letters, so the name is the jewellery rather than a mark on it. Both are lovely, they are not the same product, and the second is the one that is hard to find in waterproof steel.
Ella Name Necklace
Your name cut as the pendant itself, in flowing script, in 316L stainless steel with an 18k gold PVD finish. The piece the rest of this comparison does not have an entry for.
Waterproof. Hypoallergenic. Made to your spelling.

View Name NecklaceWhich Brand Fits Which Buyer
No single brand wins this comparison, because buyers are not all looking for the same thing. Here is how we would route people, including away from ourselves where that is the right answer.
| If you want… | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The lowest entry price in coated steel | PURELEI | From €12.90, on ion-plated steel, with a five-year warranty behind it. |
| A pure waterproof proposition | Luamaya or ICRUSH | 316L steel with 18k plating or PVD, and a range built around water rather than adapted to it. |
| The strongest design signature | Paul Valentine | Distinctive aesthetic across brass, 925 and 14k lines. Treat the brass pieces as non-waterproof. |
| A precious metal you will care for | Elli or Kuzzoi | 925 sterling silver, polishable forever. Accept that it tarnishes. |
| Straightforward steel basics | Heideman | 316L stainless steel, hypoallergenic and corrosion resistant. |
| Your name, in script, that survives water | Moonela | The one column where the rest of the market has no entry. |
Where we belong in that list is narrow and specific, and we would rather say so than claim to beat everyone on everything. We do not undercut PURELEI on entry price, and we are a smaller operation than several brands here. What we do is the personalisation piece, in the material that handles water, at £24 to £60. Our tarnish-free earrings use the same construction, which matters most for earrings because the metal sits inside a piercing.
And the honesty that matters most: our pieces are 18k gold PVD over 316L stainless steel. Coated, not solid gold, and we will never describe them otherwise. The finish is bonded in a vacuum chamber rather than dipped in a bath, which is why it handles showers and sea water far better than conventional plating, but it is still a finish over steel. Anyone in this category telling you their €30 necklace is real gold is telling you something untrue, and you should read everything else on that page accordingly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which waterproof jewellery brand is best in 2026?
There is no single winner, because the criteria differ. PURELEI leads on accessible pricing and warranty length, with a Trustpilot rating of 4.4 across roughly 5,450 reviews. Luamaya and ICRUSH offer the cleanest pure waterproof propositions on 316L steel. For a personalised script name necklace in a waterproof material, the market is genuinely thin, which is the specific gap Moonela fills.
Is PURELEI jewellery really waterproof?
PURELEI uses stainless steel with 14K or 18K ion plating, and ion plating belongs to the PVD family of vacuum coating processes, which is the right technology for water resistance. The brand backs its jewellery with a five-year warranty introduced in late 2024. The figure not published is coating thickness in microns, the main variable determining how long any coated finish lasts, and that omission is common across the whole category.
Can you shower with stainless steel jewellery?
Yes. 316L stainless steel is corrosion resistant and does not mind water. The question is what sits on top of it. A vacuum-deposited PVD or IP finish handles showers, swimming and sweat without degrading. A conventional electroplated gold layer wears faster with repeated water contact, though the steel underneath will not rust or turn your skin green.
What is the difference between ion plating and PVD?
Ion plating is a PVD process, not a separate technology. PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition, a family of vacuum coating methods, and ion plating is one specific technique within it that uses ion bombardment to improve how the coating bonds to the surface. When a brand says ion plating or IP gold, it is describing a vacuum-deposited coating rather than a chemical electroplating bath.
Does 925 sterling silver work as waterproof jewellery?
Not in the sense that most people mean. Sterling silver is a precious metal that can be polished back to brightness indefinitely, but it tarnishes through reaction with sulphur compounds in air and on skin. Brands working primarily in 925, such as Elli and Kuzzoi, make genuinely good jewellery for someone who enjoys maintaining it. For jewellery you never take off, coated 316L stainless steel is the more practical material.
Is Luamaya or ICRUSH better for waterproof pieces?
They are close on materials. Luamaya, founded in 2016, uses 316L stainless steel with 18k gold plating and positions itself explicitly on waterproof wear, with a Trustpilot rating of 4.0 across around 2,980 reviews and roughly 13% at one star. ICRUSH, founded in Cologne in 2013, uses stainless steel with PVD coating and sits around 4.0. Choose on design rather than expecting a large material difference.
Which brands make a waterproof name necklace?
Very few. PURELEI does not offer a script name necklace, and neither Luamaya nor ICRUSH lists one. Personalisation elsewhere tends to be engraving on a bar or disc, or a script name in sterling silver, which tarnishes. A pendant cut into the shape of the name itself, in 18k gold PVD over 316L steel, is what Moonela makes and what the rest of this comparison largely does not.
How long does gold-plated stainless steel last in water?
It depends almost entirely on the coating method and thickness, and thickness is rarely published. A vacuum-deposited PVD or IP finish substantially outlasts conventional electroplating under the same conditions. Friction matters more than water: rings and bracelets show wear before necklaces and earrings on every brand, because they rub against surfaces all day. No coated finish is permanent, and any brand claiming otherwise is overselling.
Your Name. In Water.
Every Moonela piece is 18k gold PVD over 316L surgical-grade stainless steel. Coated, never solid gold, and we say so. Including the script name necklaces the rest of this comparison does not make.
